“How can one trust in anything when everything is always changing?”

David Campton's The Cagebirds is an absurdist one-act play, that features six individuals confined in a room under the care of a mysterious figure known as 'The Master.' Balance is disrupted when an outsider disrupts their new home, advocating for freedom beyond the confines. The revelation of what lies outside forever alters life within the cage, disrupting any hope of returning to normalcy.

With very little description of set, context or setting, Campton’s text enabled the creation a piece in direct dialogue with the contemporary landscape. The rehearsal process sought to interrogate modern confines faced by young people such as substance abuse and rave culture. Using movement blueprints influenced by Gecko and Temper Theatre, an experimental devising process came into fruition that combined physical experimentation and choral voice practices.

In a play commenting on the inherent limitations of words, we explored the potency of movement as a powerful form of communication.
